Get to know the 'Move Over' law

In New York, the "Move Over" law is there to protect drivers and emergency personnel. The Move Over law states that people need to check the traffic around them, slow down and move to the side if they see emergency personnel in their vehicles or on foot.

Drivers are responsible for using care when they approach emergency vehicles. By moving over into a lane further from the vehicle, they give a wider berth to those performing a job. If an ambulance or other emergency vehicle needs to pass through the traffic, it also gives it the space needed to do so safely.

When do you have to move over for emergency personnel?

It is important to move over for emergency personnel when you hear sirens, see emergency vests or reflectors or see lights. If you cannot move over because of traffic, do your best to slow down as you approach. Get out of the way of emergency vehicles as soon as you can.

The Move Over law doesn't just apply to people in the right-hand lane, which is something many people misunderstand. The Move Over law applies to all vehicles in all lanes. They should move as far from the authorities as possible, whether the emergency teams are on the shoulder or near the median.

If you do not move over for hazard or emergency vehicles, you could receive a ticket and face fines. Keep this in mind and remember that although this is a law, it's like all others in that it can only apply when it's safe for you to move to the side.
