Defending Your Rights | You Are Innocent Until Proven Guilty

Speeding in a school zone can cost you hundreds

You know that you should slow down when you approach a school zone, but that doesn't mean you always do. When kids are in class or the lights aren't flashing, you feel like there's no reason to go more slowly.

The best thing to do, though, is to slow down any time you see a school zone. If you are caught speeding in a school zone, you can face additional penalties compared to a traditional speeding ticket.

What are the penalties for speeding in a school zone in New York?

New York law states that speeding in a school zone costs between $90 and $300 during days that school is in session and between restricted hours if you are going up to 10 mph over the limit. If you are going 11 to 30 mph over the limit, the fines raise to between $180 and $600. If you speed more than 31 mph over the limit, you could face fines of up to $1,200.

If school isn't in session and the hours aren't restricted, then you still face a speeding ticket, but it's less expensive. It's between $45 and $150 for up to 10 mph, $90 to $300 for up to 30 mph over the limit and up to $600 for over 31 mph over the limit.

There are also other fees that you may have to pay, such as mandatory state fines and penalties. If you have too many points on your license, you could also face a Driver Responsibility Assessment Fee from the New York DMV.

It may not seem necessary to defend yourself against a speeding ticket, but the fines add up. Your attorney can talk to you about how to avoid excessive penalties.
