Defending Your Rights | You Are Innocent Until Proven Guilty

Should you fight a speeding ticket?

Traffic tickets may not seem very important. After all, most people will get out of a traffic ticket at some point in their lives. It would be hard to find anyone who didn't know someone who had gotten a traffic ticket for speeding or other minor offenses.

As for minor offenses, it might not seem important to fight the charges that have been placed against you. Still, it is going to go on your record, and the offense can affect you. For example, a speeding ticket could cost $45 or more. On top of that, your insurance rates could go up as a result of violating speeding laws. If you violate speeding laws too often, then you can lose your right to have a license.

Although a simple speeding ticket is unlikely to have a major impact on your life, it is still a good idea to speak with your attorney about what you can do to reduce the likelihood of having that ticket on your record. It is particularly important to consider your defense options if you were speeding 31 mph over the limit or more. When you are speeding excessively, the penalties are much higher than if you are going less than 10 mph over the limit, as an example.

New York also imposes a surcharge on moving violations. A first-time offense's surcharge could be anywhere from $88 to $93. These fines alone should make it clear that you should fight the penalties since they could have an impact on your finances immediately. Your attorney can talk to you more about your options if you want to fight a speeding ticket.
