Defending Your Rights | You Are Innocent Until Proven Guilty

Should you plead not guilty to a ticket?

If you are given a traffic ticket, you probably know that you can pay it online or in person at the court. What you may not realize is that paying the fine is an admission of guilt.

If you don't believe that you're guilty of the actions of which you're accused, it's important that you don't pay your ticket and instead appear in court. You can attend the hearing and plead not guilty. In many instances, you can also plead not guilty online or over the phone.

What do you need to plead not guilty to a ticket?

To start with, you need your TVB traffic ticket number as well as you Department of Motor Vehicles ID number or your full name, gender and date of birth as they are listed on your traffic ticket.

If you want to make a plea online or schedule a hearing, you'll need to have a traffic ticket that states "Traffic Violations Bureau" on the bottom and have an unresolved case. If the ticket doesn't say "Traffic Violations Bureau," then you may need to go to a different part of the court to address the ticket you've received.

Why isn't a ticket showing up on the system?

Remember that a ticket doesn't always show up right away, since it may take a few days for the ticket to get entered into the system. If you have the right information, wait a few days and try to enter your plea again. Your attorney will help you enter a not-guilty plea if you wish to do so.
